Taking up the rising trend of violence against women in Andhra Pradesh, the spokesperson and anchor Shyamala of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) brought up her voice during the media briefing on Tuesday. She questioned the coalition government for providing inadequate protection to women, saying the latter are increasingly being left vulnerable to attacks.
Shyamala’s attack was on Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan for not going to the house of a 16-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted in his constituency Pithapuram. She said that it is the job of that deputy chief minister to provide some consolation to the victim’s family and lamented the general apathy of the government when the victim hails from Dalit community.
Reflecting back upon the allegations Pawan Kalyan had made against Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy ahead of the election in which he stated that 30,000 girls were missing, Shyamala brought to notice the carelessness of the coalition government while dealing with the alarming increase in violence since the assumption of office. She asked questions from Pawan Kalyan as to why he was not speaking out on these issues and why he has not taken any action amid the spate of atrocities followed recently.
Shyamala further said, “We never saw such a period wherein the leaders who were highly critical even of minor issues during Jagan’s tenure are today feigning stark silence over such major issues. She had expressed shock and hurt that murders and sexual assaults on women and girls are becoming increasingly frequent, and these are due to the utter failures on the part of the previous government headed by Chandrababu Naidu.
Disturbed by these high incidences of kidnap and murder of young women going to college, Shyamala questioned the capability of safety and order that the government could provide regarding such unprecedented events. Indicating how it is its indiscriminate nature affecting any victim whatever his age or relationship, it is raising more questions on how a criminal can be so brazen and daring with impunity. The author further adds that Shyamala was sad to recall that such horrible incidents had never in the history of the state been reported in such a short four months and immediate action has been asked to protect women and ensure safety in Andhra Pradesh.
