‘Not now’ Chief Justice skips Amaravati case

Chief Justice UU Lalit showed the least interest in the YSRCP Government’s appeal on the verdict of the AP High Court regarding the capital issue of Amaravati. The supreme justice wasted no time diverting the case to another bench. It is a known fact that the Jagan-led AP Government wants to change the state’s capital Amaravati by decentralizing it to have three capitals.

The High Court however dismissed this bill and declared that the capital should remain in Amaravati as proposed by the last government. Challenging this, Jagan approached the apex court of India and categorized the tribunal bench led by the Chief Justice himself and the case came to hear. Pouring water on the hopes of the AP Government and its CM Jagan, Lalit after a quick hearing from the AP Government advocates gave his verdict by directing the case towards another bench without him.

As he is retiring soon, Lalit wants to have a peaceful exit and thus takes this decision. Now it is in the hands of yet to be assigned a new bench of justices whether or not Jagan gets his wish regarding three capitals or not. What’s more interesting is the current Chief Justice UU Lalit was once associated with Jagan as his lawyer in previous cases and the YSRCP camp expected a favorable judgment in this case.

However, the Chief of the Supreme Court showed no interest as he is exiting from the services on November 8th.
