In an emotional declaration that signals the end of an era, Virat Kohli has retired from Test cricket. A master of passion, consistency, and unparalleled leadership, Kohli has called it a day after a glorious 14-year journey in the longest and toughest version of the game.
As per sources, Kohli had already informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) much in advance about his decision. While the board had initially asked him to reconsider and postpone the announcement, Kohli remained firm on his decision. With the BCCI finally granting its nod, the former India captain broke the news personally to fans through an emotional social media post.
Looking back at his phenomenal red-ball journey, Kohli felt a profound sense of gratitude towards what the format has brought into his life. He remembered taking the field in Test whites for the very first time 14 years ago—never knowing the format would end up molding his career and personality. Test cricket being the toughest yet most rewarding format, he gave all the credit to the format for having instilled in him discipline, patience, and resilience. Kohli also accepted that quitting wasn’t simple, but felt it was time to move on.
“This decision wasn’t simple by any means, but I know my heart tells me that the moment is right,” Kohli expressed, stating that he will always remember every moment he spent playing for India in the whites.
During his illustrious Test career, Kohli appeared in 123 games, scoring 9,230 runs. His record includes 30 centuries and 7 double centuries—a record by any measure. As a captain, Kohli transformed India’s strategy for Test cricket. Kohli led India in 68 Tests, winning 40, and finished his career as the most successful Indian Test captain with an authoritative win percentage of 58.82%.
