The sixty-year-long struggle for the formation of Telangana state came to an end during the Dr. Manmohan Singh government only. The aspiration of four crore Telangana people was fulfilled during his tenure, in which he played a decisive and determined role.
The announcement of the formation of Telangana state was made on December 9 when he was the Prime Minister. He is credited with correcting the mistake of the Congress in 2014, which broke its promise to give Telangana state in 1971, and paving the way for the formation of a separate Telangana state.
Even though his government did not have a full majority, he strategically pushed the Telangana bill through both houses. The formation of Telangana was strongly opposed by Andhra leaders and MPs from the Congress party. The AP leaders in the central cabinet threatened to resign from the cabinet.
However, Manmohan Singh did not back down. Despite the uproar in Parliament, the Telangana state was formed as promised. The then Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that Manmohan Singh played a key role in getting the Telangana Bill passed in Parliament.
Even after losing power, Manmohan demanded a solution to the division issues. He wanted all the division promises to be fulfilled. Manmohan Singh is among the very few national leaders who know the oppression, economic exploitation, and social and cultural discrimination that continued against Telangana for decades.
Manmohan Singh is a ruler who understands the aspirations of Telangana and the disasters that will happen if the state is not formed, as BRS chief KCR and Telangana ideologue Acharya Kothapalli Jayashankar have explained.
The announcement made by the UPA government on December 9 that the process of forming Telangana will be initiated is said to be a combination of the three. Although the then Home Minister Chidambaram made the announcement, Jayashankar sir was the bridge between KCR and Manmohan Singh. Manmohan Singh advised KCR on garnering support when the Telangana Bill was introduced in Parliament.
