Ahead of the Lok Sabha session on Monday morning, several Opposition MPs including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi protested outside the Parliament building against the misuse of central probe agencies such as the CBI and Enforcement Directorate by the central government.
Meanwhile, disruptions in the Lower House continued as the sitting after Speaker Om Birla did not accept the adjournment motions by Opposition MPs on the NEET paper leak issue again. Meanwhile, Birla also addressed allegations of mics being switched off and said the Speaker does not have control over it.
As the three new criminal laws come into effect today, Congress MP Manish Tewari has moved an adjournment motion for the purpose of discussing them. The three new laws — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam — are replacing colonial-era laws of the IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act.
“The laws lay the foundations of turning India into a Police State. Their implementation must be stopped forthwith and Parliament must re-examine them,” Tewari wrote in a post on X today. A motion for an adjournment of the business of the House, moved by the Congress, is for discussing a “definite matter of urgent public importance”.
In the Lok Sabha, BJP member and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur will begin the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address. The Motion will be seconded by first-term Lok Sabha member Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of the late BJP stalwart Sushma Swaraj.
The Lok Sabha has allocated 16 hours for this debate, which will conclude with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply on Tuesday. In the Rajya Sabha, 21 hours have been set aside for the debate, with the prime minister expected to reply on Wednesday.
Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned on Friday amid acrimonious scenes after Speaker Om Birla refused permission to the Opposition’s demand for a discussion on the alleged irregularities in the NEET results. In the Rajya Sabha, a lacklustre debate followed after a couple of adjournments and staging of a walkout by Opposition members. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, along with the Opposition MPs, had stepped in the Well to demand a discussion . Kharge later alleged that despite having raised his hand for a long time, he was not given an opportunity to speak.
