Veteran actor and former MP Murali Mohan has called on the Andhra Pradesh government to initiate its own film awards, similar to those presented by the Telangana government. Speaking at an event in Hyderabad organised to announce the Gaddar Awards, he emphasised the need for coordination between the two Telugu-speaking states in recognising excellence in cinema.
Murali Mohan stated that presenting separate awards for the same Telugu films by both state governments could lead to confusion and unnecessary controversies. “Such a practice invites avoidable discussions and disputes. Instead, both governments should arrive at a mutual understanding. For instance, if Telangana announces awards in one year, Andhra Pradesh can do so the next year. This rotational approach will prevent any complications,” he suggested.
He further remarked that awarding different films in the two states could create divisions. “Telugu cinema belongs to both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. No state is greater or lesser in this regard. Telugu audiences are one and the same when it comes to cinema. Our films are now screened globally, and in many cases, audiences in the United States are watching them before viewers here,” he said.
Murali Mohan urged both governments to consider the unity of the Telugu film industry and its audience while making such decisions. The response of the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments to his proposal is awaited.
