Mild earthquakes created panic in several areas of the Telugu states, causing the ground to shake for a few seconds. Residents, alarmed by the tremors, rushed out of their homes and apartments. The earthquake was recorded at a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter Scale, which occurred on Wednesday at 7.27 am in Mulugu with Medaram as the epicentre.
According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicenter was Mulugu district with a depth of 40 km. Tremors were so strong that the quake made its way into the entire region of Telangana including Hyderabad. The NCS tweeted: “Earthquake of Magnitude: 5.3, Occurred on December 4, 2024, 07:27:02 IST, Lat: 18.44 N, Location: Mulugu, Telangana.”
There are no reports of immediate casualties and major damage, but authorities are assessing the situation for damage. This was a rare earthquake in Telangana, which rarely experienced seismic activity. In fact, according to a local weather expert, this was one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in the past 20 years.
The tremors were felt in and around Hyderabad, as well as in surrounding towns including Hanumakonda, Khammam, Kothagudem, Manuguru, Godavari Khani, Bhupalapalli, Charla, Chintakani, Bhadrachalam, Vijayawada, Jaggayyapet, Thiruvur, and Gampalagudem.
Parts of Hyderabad, including Borabanda, Rahmat Nagar, Karmika Nagar, and Yusufguda, reported mild tremors.Warangal city and surrounding areas faced slight tremors, with residents rushing out in fear. The tremors lasted for a few seconds, creating confusion among the locals. Earthquakes were reported in Kothagudem town and Manuguru sub-division.
Locals in Khammam district reported that the tremor lasted for approximately three seconds. While no major damage has been reported so far, the incident caused widespread concern among residents in the affected regions. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
The unexpected shaking sent many residents into a state of fear, prompting people to rush out of their homes and apartments to seek safety. Authorities have not reported any immediate damages or injuries, but emergency services are on standby to assess the situation.
Meanwhile, other parts of the country have also witnessed earthquakes in the past few days. On November 30, an earthquake of magnitude 2.9 hit Assam’s Karbi Anglong region, while on November 28, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit Jammu and Kashmir.
