Harish Rao Cautions Government Against Transferring Krishna River Projects to KRMB

Monday, September 16, 2024

Hyderabad: The BRS, on Friday, strongly urged the Telangana state government to refrain from relinquishing control of its River Krishna projects to the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB). Former irrigation minister T. Harish Rao emphasized that such a decision could be detrimental to Telangana’s interests, potentially making the state subservient to the KRMB, Central Water Commission, and the Apex Committee. He highlighted that this move would grant these entities authority over crucial decisions regarding water usage from the river projects, impacting hydel power generation, water release, and the supply of drinking water, including that for Hyderabad city.

Addressing concerns beyond political affiliations, Harish Rao stressed the need for the state government to retain control over the Krishna River projects. He underscored the potential risks associated with ceding control, cautioning that the state would then be at the mercy of external bodies for essential decisions, which could adversely affect Telangana’s water management and supply strategies.
