Thursday, December 4, 2025
Actor Kamal Haasan has stirred controversy in Karnataka with his recent remarks claiming that the Kannada language originated from Tamil. The comment, made during the audio launch event of his upcoming film Thug Life, has sparked widespread anger among Kannada-speaking communities.
In response, protests were held in several parts of Karnataka. The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) strongly condemned Kamal Haasan’s statement and lodged a complaint against him at the RT Nagar Police Station in Bengaluru. The organization alleged that his comments hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas and had the potential to incite discord between Kannada and Tamil communities. A police case has reportedly been registered.
Kamal Issues Apology
Reacting to the backlash, Kamal Haasan has since apologized, stating that his comments were made with affection and not intended to disrespect anyone. He emphasized that discussions on linguistic history should be left to historians and language scholars, not politicians.
Despite the apology, protests have continued in parts of Karnataka, with demonstrators burning posters of Thug Life and raising slogans against Kamal Haasan. Industry analysts suggest the controversy could impact the film’s release in the state.
Political Reactions
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah weighed in, criticizing Haasan’s lack of understanding of Kannada’s linguistic heritage and stating that demeaning other languages is unacceptable. Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra also expressed strong disapproval of the actor’s remarks. In light of the controversy, several leaders have called for a ban on Kamal Haasan’s films in Karnataka.
