Tuesday, September 17, 2024
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the ongoing protests by junior doctors over the state’s recent incident of murder and assault. She expressed her willingness to resign if necessary for the welfare of the people. Banerjee also urged the central government to ensure justice for the victim of the RG Kar incident.
In her statement, Banerjee mentioned that she had waited for nearly two hours on Thursday for a meeting with the doctors but did not receive any response. She apologized to the people of West Bengal for the delay in resolving the issue, which they had hoped would be settled by now.
Regarding the legal complexities of the case, Banerjee explained that while live telecast of the discussions could not happen due to the case being sub judice, video recordings had been arranged, which would be shared with the doctors upon approval from the Supreme Court.
Banerjee highlighted that the protests had affected seven lakh patients and led to 27 deaths. Nevertheless, she assured that no action would be taken against the protesting doctors, stating, “As seniors, we choose to forgive them.”
This situation underscores the broader impact of the healthcare strike and the critical need for resolution.
