The Central Government has announced a revision in the salaries, allowances, and pensions of Members of Parliament (MPs). The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs issued a Gazette notification on Monday, stating that the revised structure will be applicable retroactively from April 1, 2023.
As per the notification, the monthly salary of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members has been increased from ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,24,000. The daily allowance has been revised from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500. Additionally, the pension for former MPs has been raised from ₹25,000 to ₹31,000 per month, with an annual increment of ₹2,500 for every additional year of service beyond five years.
The announcement coincides with the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament. The last revision in MPs’ salaries and allowances took place in April 2018, when the base salary was set at ₹1,00,000 per month, taking into account inflation and the rising cost of living.
Beyond their salaries, MPs receive a constituency allowance of ₹70,000 per month for office maintenance and voter engagement, ₹60,000 for office-related expenses, and a daily allowance of ₹2,000 during parliamentary sessions. These allowances are also subject to revision under the new framework.
MPs are entitled to additional privileges, including an annual allowance for telecommunication services, 34 free domestic air travel tickets per year for themselves and their family members, and unlimited first-class rail travel for both official and personal purposes. They are also eligible to claim a mileage allowance for road travel. Furthermore, MPs receive 50,000 units of free electricity and 4,000 kiloliters of free water annually.
The government provides rent-free residential accommodation in Delhi throughout an MP’s five-year tenure. Based on seniority, they are allocated hostel rooms, apartments, or bungalows. MPs who opt out of official accommodation are eligible for a monthly housing rental allowance.
