The tollywood box office witnessed three huge flops in April. While Nani’s rustic entertainer ‘Dasara’ and Sai Dharam Tej’s mystical thriller Virupaksha kept the ticket windows ringing with strong collections at both domestic and overseas markets, all other films which released this Summer so far have had a disappointing run in all territories.
Summer 2023 started with a bang when Nani’s Dasara hit the screens on March 30. The film took a sensational start at the worldwide box office and minted strong revenues in the first weekend. However, it lost steam during the weekdays. Nevertheless, Dasara emerged as the highest-grossing film in Nani’s career. Though the film didn’t turn out to be a clean hit in all territories as expected by trade circles, it managed to collect impressive numbers in Naizam and North America.
Ravi Teja’s Ravanasura, which created a good buzz after his previous outing Dhamaka scored a blockbuster, failed to make even a small impact as it was outrightly rejected by the moviegoers. The Sudheer Varma directional couldn’t withstand the poor reviews and discouraging talk and left no trace at the box office. It ended as a disaster in all terms. Kiran Abbavaram’s Meter evaporated from screens in no time as it failed on all counts and couldn’t sustain even during the first weekend.
Samantha’s ambitious attempt with Shaakunthalam came a cropper as the Gunasekhar directional tanked heavily at the box office. It emerged as one of the biggest loss ventures for ace producer Dil Raju. The film failed to garner even average openings despite Samantha’s star power. It incurred heavy losses to all buyers and ended as a huge debacle.
Sai Dharam Tej’s latest offering Virupaksha is the only blockbuster of this Summer to date. The film grossed over 75 Crores by the end of the second weekend and emerged as the biggest hit of the season so far. As all other releases failed to impress moviegoers, Virupaksha might extend its solid run in the coming days as well.
Akkineni Akhil’s highly anticipated project Agent registered dismal numbers on its opening day and shocked the trade circles. The numbers further nosedived in the first weekend and dashed the hopes of its buyers. Agent is likely to be a colossal failure in terms of making and budget.
So, Summer 2023 is a mixed bag so far with one blockbuster and one decent hit as all other remaining films failed to bring cheer to the trade circles.
