Director Ashwin Kumar, whose upcoming mythological film Mahavatar: Narasimha is set to release on July 25, expressed confidence that the Bollywood adaptation of Ramayana will mark a major shift in the Indian film industry. In a recent interview with an English media outlet, Kumar spoke at length about the future of mythological cinema in India.
Commenting on the failure of Adipurush, he said, “There were several reasons for its failure, which I won’t delve into now. But I understood what the makers were trying to convey. The industry has learned many lessons from it. That film was not the end of mythological storytelling. Audiences are always interested in powerful narratives like these, no matter how many times they are retold.”
He added, “Now, Bollywood is coming up with Ramayana, and all eyes are on it. I strongly believe it will create history. A film’s success is not just about its budget, but about how the story is told. That’s the core objective of Mahavatar: Narasimha. It will offer audiences a truly cinematic experience.”
Kumar also highlighted the growing demand for stories rooted in Indian mythology. As part of the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe, renowned production house Hombale Films is set to produce seven films based on the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. The first among them, Mahavatar: Narasimha, will be released in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi.
