The defamation suit filed by the Telangana unit of the BJP against Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will come up for hearing in the Supreme Court on the 8th of this month. Revanth Reddy’s speech during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign became controversial. The Telangana High Court dismissed the defamation suit filed by the Telangana unit of the BJP on this.
Then, the BJP has moved the Supreme Court challenging this. A bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and Atul S Chandrukar will hear the matter. On May 4 last year, the state general secretary of BJP had filed a petition in the High Court on behalf of the BJP, alleging that Revanth Reddy had campaigned against their party with false and hateful words.
The BJP said in its petition that Revanth Reddy had said that he would end reservations if the BJP came to power, and this was inappropriate and hateful propaganda. After hearings, on August 1 this year, the High Court, on the request of Revanth Reddy, declared it inadmissible and dismissed it.
Earlier, the trial court had stated that there was evidence that the Chief Minister had engaged in false political propaganda through this speech, which the BJP has now filed in the Supreme Court. Earlier, the BJP said that under Section 125 of the IPC and the Representation of the People Act, he should be considered as having encouraged enmity and conflict between the two sections of the society, and the defamation case is valid.
Meanwhile, Revanth Reddy challenged the trial court ruling in the High Court and said that the case and defamation should not be brought under the ambit of other serious allegations due to comments made during the election campaign.
The High Court, which considered this petition, said that since the plaintiff’s case did not have any official permission from the national level of the BJP, leaving aside the issue of other evidence, it is considered that the case is not worthy of hearing.
Moreover, political speeches, especially during the election phase, are often exaggerated. The High Court has made it clear that it would be even more excessive to take such things and go for a defamation suit. It has concluded that there will be no case against Revanth Reddy in this matter and there will be no investigation. The case filed by the BJP branch in the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict has now led to a political sensation.
