Senior Congress leader and former MP V. Hanumantha Rao has expressed strong objection to the co-living hostels that are expanding in the developed area of Hi-Tech City in Hyderabad. He has asked Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu to take regulatory measures against such accommodation facilities.
He warned that the presence of young men and women together in the same hostel leads to immoral behavior and dangerous actions in the society. He suggested that such trends should be curbed if Hyderabad is to be ranked at the top in the country. He called on student unions to focus on this matter. He deplored that factional killings were prevalent in the state in the past, but now the increase in ‘love murders’ is worrying.
The former minister expressed his concern that heinous incidents like a daughter killing her own husband or mother are children worrying about the extent to which society is deteriorating. He also urged people not to spread such violent incidents on social media. He felt that this could incite crimes or cause more suffering to the families of the victims.
Hanumantha Rao questioned the fact that human rights organizations talk about Maoist attacks and political violence but remain silent on sensitive social issues like ‘love murders’. He demanded that such crimes should also be taken seriously and attention should be paid to them.
He called on psychologists, social scientists and other intellectuals to think deeply about these problems and suggest solutions to them. Stating that there is a fundamental mistake somewhere in the society, he said that there is a need to correct it. He suggested that research should be conducted to see whether the increasing stress, mental problems and cultural conflicts among the youth are leading to these crimes.
The senior Congress leader made it clear that positive change in society is possible only by promoting family values, morality and culture. He also called on all women to take Savitribai Phule as an ideal and to take her work for women’s education and social reforms as inspiration.
He hoped that women, inspired by great figures like Savitribai Phule, would become aware of their rights and participate in building a strong and intelligent society. He said that this entire discussion would highlight the need to strike a balance between the rapid changes in modern society, the impact of technology, and social values of individual freedom.
