Actor Rajkummar Rao has officially confirmed that he will play the role of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly in the upcoming biopic. Speaking to national media, Rao stated that portraying Ganguly on screen is a significant responsibility and admitted he is feeling the pressure to do justice to the role.
The actor revealed that he has been learning Bengali from his wife as part of his preparation. “It’s a huge responsibility to play Sourav Ganguly. I’m nervous but excited to bring his journey to life on screen,” Rao said.
Though an official announcement from the production team is still awaited, Ganguly had previously expressed that Rao would be a good fit for the role. This led to widespread speculation, and reports in Bollywood circles even suggested that filming had already begun.
The biopic, which will depict Ganguly’s personal and professional journey, is being directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Luv Ranjan. Additional cast details are yet to be revealed.
The film will chronicle key phases of Ganguly’s life, including his two-decade-long cricket career, his retirement in 2008, his tenure as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, and his subsequent three-year stint as president of the BCCI. Work on the biopic has been underway since 2021.
