Andhra Pradesh is in the thick of vigorous political activity currently, with legal fire burning under a number of top leaders from YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). The recent series of events has generated extensive debate in political and public forums.
In a major action, senior YSRCP leader and former minister Kodali Nani was reportedly held at the Kolkata airport when he tried to board a flight to Colombo. He is in the eye of the storm for several criminal cases, and a lookout notice had already been issued against him. Due to this, airport officials stepped in and informed officials from Andhra Pradesh, halting his departure.
This follows the arrest of another YSRCP big gun, Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, who was arrested at Bengaluru airport and is now being brought to Vijayawada by police.
Kodali Nani has been charged for many years with suspected irregularities and abuse of power during the past YSRCP government. Once the new coalition government took office, there were a number of cases registered against him. Replying to this, Nani had at first gone to court to avail himself of legal protection. Due to health problems, however, he was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai and underwent a bypass surgery. After a recovery, he returned to attending public and private functions.
Not long ago, photos of Kodali Nani at a wedding appeared on social media and went viral. These photos raised questions, particularly given that they came up at a time when the lookout notices were officially released.
This new development injects more heat into an already heated political climate in Andhra Pradesh, pointing toward a rocky road ahead for the YSRCP leadership.
