Unni Mukundan Confirms ‘Marco 2’ is Not Happening

Friday, December 5, 2025
The Malayalam action movie Marco surprised all of us when it was released last year. Even though the film generated hardly any buzz before its release, it became a box office blockbuster hit. Its dark plot, gritty action, and strong performance by Unni Mukundan gave the film cult status among the masses. But it wasn’t totally praise — the movie also received heavy flak for its violence.

Mostly, it was the family audience in North India that were disturbed by the graphic content. Reports even surfaced of some cinema halls cancelling shows due to public complaints, showing how divisive the film was. Marco was still able to win the affection of action fans, however, and Unni Mukundan’s fan following grew exponentially throughout South India and beyond.

Of course, word began to spread about Marco 2, with fans eagerly looking forward to a sequel. But in a recent social media exchange, Unni Mukundan himself shut off all speculation. When someone asked him about Marco 2, the actor made it clear that there are no plans to continue the story. He mentioned the overwhelming negativity surrounding the violence in the film as the primary reason for the decision, and promised fans that he’s concentrating on bringing more meaningful and impactful cinema instead.

However, sources close to the industry suggest that the decision wasn’t solely based on public feedback. Director Haneef Adeni, who helmed the original, has reportedly signed a massive pan-India project in Telugu under star producer Dil Raju. With his hands full developing that film, Marco 2 has been pushed aside indefinitely.

Additionally, insiders reveal that the producers of Marco are also not keen on making a sequel. Concerned that continuing the franchise with more violence could damage their banner’s reputation, they’ve dropped the idea completely and have no plans to sell the rights to anyone else.

So, even if Unni Mukundan wanted to reprise his role as Marco, the lack of backing from both the director and producers has made the sequel virtually impossible.

Interestingly, there’s strong industry buzz that director Haneef Adeni’s next film might star Nandamuri Balakrishna, adding to the intrigue around his upcoming Telugu debut — though no official confirmation has been made.

In the bigger picture, shelving Marco 2 might be a smart move. Stories that are dark, intense, and highly controversial often make a deeper impact when left as standalone films. Stretching them into a franchise sometimes dilutes their original essence. For now, fans can look forward to what Unni Mukundan and the team have in store next — hopefully with the same intensity, but with a fresher, more thoughtful approach.
