The case of issuing a passport in a fake name to underworld mafia don Abu Salem’s girlfriend and actress Monica Bedi, which created a sensation across the country and internationally two and a half decades ago, has once again come to the fore. It may be recalled that this incident happened when former chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s OSD Pellakur Krishnamohan Reddy, who was recently arrested in the liquor scam case, was the Kurnool Tahsildar.
He issued a residence certificate to Monica Bedi in the name of Sana Malik Kamal on April 9, 2001. He gave a false certificate stating that she was residing at Babu Gounda Street in Kurnool. Monica Bedi managed to get a passport by circumventing it. She fled to Portugal in 2002 along with her boyfriend, Abu Salem, who was a key player in the 1993 Mumbai blasts and was charged in several cases related to sedition.
After that, it came to light that the seed of making these fake passports was sown in Kurnool itself. First, the Kurnool police registered a case, and then the CBI stepped in. Krishna Mohan Reddy was interrogated. But, he somehow escaped in that case and became a witness, saying that he had issued a residence certificate based on the report given by the then RI Mohammed Younis.
Meanwhile, PSR Anjaneyulu was the Kurnool district SP when the fake passport was issued to Monica Bedi. He was the one who issued a no-objection certificate for the issuance of a passport in the name of Sana Malik Kamal based on the reports given by the field inspection officers. N. Sanjay came after Anjaneyulu as the Kurnool SP. During his tenure, this fake passport issue came to light in August 2002.
There are allegations and criticisms against Sanjay that he could not act strictly in the case and that the key accused could not be identified even after they fled abroad. PSR Anjaneyulu is currently in jail after being arrested in the Mumbai actress Kadambari Jethwani’s illegal arrest case.
Moreover, The ACB had filed a case against Sanjay a few years ago for committing large-scale misuse of funds while serving as the head of the CID department and the DG of the Fire Department during the Jagan’s regime. He is presently under suspension. In the wake of Krishna Mohan Reddy’s recent arrest, this passport issue that took place in 2001 and 2002 has once again become a topic of discussion.
The court convicted mafia don Abu Salem and Monica Bedi in this case, along with the then Kurnool Revenue Inspector Mohammed Younis and ASI Sattar, and sentenced all of them.
