Renu Desai, a well-known personality for her outspokenness and active social media presence, recently spoke candidly in a podcast on some major issues. They ranged from religion, relationships, the role of social media, women’s safety, economic growth, and climate change. In spite of the seriousness of the discussion, Renu was disappointed that the media only picked up on one thing: what she said about a possible second marriage.
Renu expressed her annoyance, saying, “It appears that the media is very much interested in my second marriage. Though I spoke of various significant topics in my interview, it is disheartening to note that all the important points I spoke of were overpowered, and all the focus was on my private life alone.”
She encouraged the people and the media to shift their interest from her personal affairs and devote their interest towards the important social issues that she raised. “At 44, I would like people to stop worrying so much about if I marry again. Let’s concentrate on concrete issues such as women’s security, tax amendments, economic growth, and climate change. If we turn the spotlight towards these issues, we can become good citizens and a more humane species.”
Renu asserted that her marital choices are personal in nature and have no societal ramifications. “I have already spoken about this issue many times. My decisions only affect me and my family, but not the law and society as a whole,” she further added.
Wrapping up her address, Renu called on the media to utilize its power and platform to concentrate on more meaningful issues instead of sensationalizing personal decisions. “I invite journalists to apply their education and experience to reporting on issues that really matter, not on superficial features of a woman’s personal life.”
