Mumbai: A Mumbai court has sentenced renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma to three months in jail in connection with a cheque bounce case. The Andheri Magistrate Court also issued a non-bailable warrant against the filmmaker and directed him to pay ₹3.7 lakh as compensation to the complainant within three months.
The court stated that if the compensation is not paid within the stipulated time, Varma would face an additional three months of simple imprisonment. The case was filed in 2018 by Mahesh Chandra, who alleged that a cheque issued by Varma had bounced.
The judgment has brought renewed attention to legal compliance in financial transactions involving high-profile individuals.
