In a tragic incident, Punjab ruling AAP legislator Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, 58, from Ludhiana (West), died of bullet injuries under mysterious circumstances at his residence late on Friday night. He reportedly suffered a bullet injury to his head.
He was rushed to DMC Hospital, where he was declared dead. After the incident, Police Commissioner Kuldeep Chahal and Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal also rushed to the hospital. Police said an autopsy report would confirm whether Bassi had committed suicide or if he had accidentally shot himself.
“The incident happened around midnight, and he was declared dead when he was brought to the DMC hospital…” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja.
“Gurpreet Gogi was declared dead at the hospital, his body has been kept at the mortuary in DMC hospital. Post-mortem will be conducted. As per the family members, he shot himself accidentally, he sustained bullet injuries to his head. Cause of death will be clear once the post-mortem report comes…”, said Joint Police Commissioner Jaskaran Singh Teja.
Teja said, “As per the family members, he shot himself accidentally and sustained bullet injuries to his head. Gurpreet Gogi was declared dead at the hospital; his body has been kept at the mortuary in the DMC hospital.” The incident occurred around 12 a.m., soon after his return from a public function.
His wife, who was in another room, heard the gunshots and found him lying in a pool of blood. On hearing the bullet sound, she rushed to inquire and found him lying in a pool of blood. Gogi’s security guards immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
Gogi is survived by his wife, Sukhchain Kaur Gogi, a son, and a daughter. Gogi had joined the AAP in 2022 and defeated two-time MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu during the Assembly elections from the Ludhiana (West) Assembly constituency. Gogi was a Ludhiana Municipal Corporation councilor twice before becoming a legislator in 2022.
Gogi was the chairman of PSIEC. During the Congress government, Gogi was given the responsibility of Chairman of the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC). As per reports, while cleaning his licensed pistol, he was accidentally shot and killed.
He was a Congress district (Urban) president from 2014 to 2019. Before joining the AAP, Gogi was a strong contender for the post of Municipal Corporation Mayor in the Congress, but Balkar Singh Sandhu won the race. Afterward, he started distancing himself from the Congress.
