Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has clarified that he is in Hyderabad, actively participating in live interviews, dismissing allegations that he is evading authorities. Addressing the media, he spoke about the cases filed against him in Andhra Pradesh and the rumors of police visits to his residence.
Varma remarked that he would comply with legal proceedings if arrested, stating, “If they arrest me, I will go to jail, make friends with the inmates, and write four new movie scripts.” He criticized the media for exaggerating the situation, highlighting that some had questioned why he had not yet been detained.
He explained that he had been posting extensively on his “X” account for years, but cases were filed only recently in response to a few posts that allegedly hurt sentiments. “It took over a year for a few individuals to raise objections and file cases, this delay is puzzling,” he said.
Acknowledging multiple cases filed against him in different districts, Varma stated that he had informed the courts of his inability to attend hearings due to prior commitments. He alleged that police and certain media outlets recently visited his residence, and when he was not present, some media reports falsely claimed he had fled.
Varma also addressed claims that police were searching for him in Kerala and Coimbatore, stating that these reports lacked official confirmation. He criticized the media for creating speculative narratives, saying, “Some media outlets have turned into detectives, crafting stories beyond the facts.”
Defending his creative expressions, Varma pointed out that his controversial cartoons had been widely shared by prominent media houses. “Cartoons and memes are integral to free expression. Even countries like the United States cannot control them,” he noted.
The filmmaker dismissed rumors involving actors Prakash Raj and Nagarjuna allegedly sheltering him as baseless. “Despite clearly being in Hyderabad, I am being portrayed as a fugitive. Such claims are entirely unfounded,” he concluded.
