During the previous YSRCP Government in Andhra Pradesh, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma had gotten himself into controversy with his biopic Vyuham on Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. He posted some provocative social media content to promote that film targeting opposition leaders Chandrababu Naidu and Nara Lokesh and Pawan kalyan. Those posts had already triggered several FIRs against him in other parts of the state.
In an attempt to counter the legal challenges, Varma approached the High Court, seeking to quash one of the FIRs and requesting protection from arrest. However, the court refused his plea and advised him to apply for bail instead.
The situation further escalated when Maddipadu police from Prakasam district issued two notices summoning Varma for questioning. Despite the notices, he failed to appear, prompting the police to initiate a search for his arrest. Varma responded to these developments by releasing a video statement, asserting that he was not absconding and was actively involved in film production work.
As the cases against him piled up, Varma filed a fresh petition in the High Court, where he argued that registering multiple cases over the same social media post was unlawful. He sought a directive to halt further complaints on the matter and urged the court to dismiss all existing cases filed against him.
Today is the scheduled day for hearing of the petition filed by Varma before the High Court, whose decision may impact significantly on the ongoing litigation in which the film-maker is involved.
