Tuesday, November 19, 2024

Kondru Sanjay Murthy, an IAS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the 15th Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. This is the first time a Telugu-origin individual has been named to this prestigious position. The appointment was confirmed by President Droupadi Murmu, as announced by the central government.

Sanjay Murthy, born on December 24, 1964, holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and began his IAS career in 1989. He has served in various capacities, including as Secretary for Higher Education since September 2021. In this role, he played a crucial part in implementing the National Education Policy.

Murthy is the son of KSR Murthy, a former Amalapuram MP who represented the constituency in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections as a Congress candidate. Prior to his political career, KSR Murthy also served as a Secretary-level officer in the central government.

Although Sanjay Murthy was slated to retire next month, the central government extended his service by appointing him as CAG. He will hold the position for a maximum of six years or until he reaches the age of 65. He succeeds Girish Chandra Murmu, whose tenure is nearing completion.
