The Central government has decided to observe June 25, the day the Emergency was declared in 1975, as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced Friday.
‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will commemorate the massive contributions of all those who endured inhuman pains of 1975 Emergency, Amit Shah said in a statement.
In a post on social media platform X, Shah said, “On 25 June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, showing her dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of Indian democracy by imposing emergency in the country. Lakhs of people were jailed without any reason and the voice of the media was suppressed.”
The post further said that “the Government of India has decided to celebrate 25 June every year as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’, to remind us of the immense contribution of all those people who suffered the inhuman pain of the Emergency of 1975.”
The decision made by the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is intended to honor the spirit of millions who struggled to revive democracy despite facing inexplicable persecution at the hands of an oppressive government.
“The observance of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will help keep the eternal flame of individual freedom and the defence of our democracy alive in every Indian, thus preventing dictatorial forces like the Congress from repeating those horrors,” Amit Shah added.
The BJP was pushed into defence during the recent election campaign when Congress described the BJP target of winning 400 seats in Lok Sabha as intended to scrap the present constitution with overwhelming majority in the Lok Sabha. It further alleged that if BJP got 400 seats it will take away reservations given by the constitution to SCs, STs and OBCs.
Though Prime Minister Modi and other leaders tried to convince the people stating that they had never tried to dilute the constitution though having absolute majority in the Lok Sabha for the last five years, it has lost several seats reserved for SCs and STs. Since then, the Prime Minister and other leaders started accusing the Congress as the real threat to the constitution and raising the issue of emergency again and again.
Soon after his election as speaker, Om Birla announced the passing of a resolution condemning the emergency. President Droupadi Murmu mentioned the emergency in her address to the joint sessions of the Parliament. Prime Minister Modi also referred to emergency excess in his addresses in both houses of the parliament.
