The Nellore Lok Sabha constituency in Andhra Pradesh is gearing up for a showdown between two Reddys: Vijaysai Reddy of the ruling YSR Congress Party and Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, the joint candidate of the TDP-BJP-Jana Sena alliance, scheduled for May 13. Vijaysai Reddy, a close confidant of Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, faces off against Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, who recently switched sides from the YSRCP to join the Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party in February.

Historically, Nellore has been a stronghold of the Congress party, securing victory in the seat 13 times. However, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, YSRCP’s Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy emerged victorious with 5,76,396 votes, closely trailed by TDP’s A Prabhakar Reddy with 5,62,918 votes. Congress candidate Narayana Reddy Vakati lagged far behind with a mere 22,870 votes.

In the 2019 elections, A Prabhakar Reddy, who had switched allegiance to the YSRCP, clinched victory with 6,83,830 votes, while TDP’s Bida Mastan Rao secured the second position with 5,35,259 votes.
