Star heroine Nayanthara issued an apology through her Instagram post as her latest film ‘Annapoorni’ sparked a huge outrage for hurting religious sentiments. She posted a letter drafted in Hindi, English and Tamil with ‘Jai Shri Ram’ heading and Hindu religious symbol OM through which the apology was tendered.
Nayanthara said the team never intended to hurt anyone’s sentiment and also it was an inadvertent mistake. She expressed her sincere and heartfelt apologies and further stated that her journey in the film industry is guided by a singular intention to spread positivity and foster learning from one another.
Annapoorni was released on December 1st in theatres and was streamed on Netflix on December 29th. It ran into controversies after a few Hindu groups objected to some scenes that reeked of anti-religious propaganda. Following an FIR on the makers of the film and social media backlash, Netflix immediately removed it last week.
In Annapoorni, Nayanthara played the role of an orthodox Brahmin woman who hails from Tamil Nadu’s Srirangam. After she befriends Farhan( played by Jai), she starts cooking meat and offers Namaz. In one scene, Nayanthara’s co-star persuades her to eat meat saying that Lord Shri Ram was also a meat eater. Such unsavoury episodes raked huge antipathy against the team for putting the Hindu religion in a bad light.
