As the Graduate MLC polls are done and dusted resulting in a huge embarrassment for the ruling party YSRCP, it is yet to face an unexpected jolt from the opposition TDP in the name of a TDP-supported candidate in the upcoming MLAs quota MLC elections.
Seven MLCs would be selected solely based on the votes by the Assembly MLAs of Andhra Pradesh and the elections are scheduled to be held on the 23rd of this month. Initially, everyone thought that this would be a piece of cake for the ruling party since it has 151 MLAs, and also 4 of TDP’s 23 MLAs directly dissented and supported YSRCP. As the tally reached 155, YSRCP wanted to showcase its authority. Then came the sudden twist as the TDP fielded its candidate Anuradha from the BC community as the seventh candidate. According to the rules, a candidate must secure 22 votes minimum to win but the new tally was only 19 for the TDP.
The recent developments made the two YSRCP leaders Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy and Anam Ramanarayana Reddy openly express their distress over YSRCP and they are in talks with TDP to join the party so the chances are these two might vote in favor of TDP bringing the TDP’s Anuradha’s support to 21. It only takes one more vote for Anuradha to win and TDP is positive regarding some of the YSRCP MLAs who are dissatisfied with Jagan’s ruling and one of them would magically vote for Anuradha. The TDP’s single MLC win might not be a huge loss to the YSRCP but it would indeed disturb the morale of the party among the public.
