WhatsApp Governance Instead of Volunteer System

Tuesday, February 18, 2025

The previous government in Andhra Pradesh implemented Volunteer system to deliver citizen centric services at the doorsteps through dedicated persons who were recruited as Village Volunteers. The initiative gained widespread acclaim because these volunteers used to help the public with various needs relating to state government departments. There was criticism as well due to the scanty salaries paid by the government to these volunteers.

After NDA government led by Chandrababu Naidu came to power, the volunteer system was kept in limbo. The present dispensation seems to have decided to do away with volunteers and came up with another first-of-its-kind initiative aimed deliver efficient services to the public. It is all set to launch WhatsApp Governance from this Thursday. IT Minister Nara Lokesh will inaugurate the initiative.

WhatApp governance will obviate the need to visit government offices for various documents by the public of Andhra Pradesh. In the first phase, 161 services will be available through this innovative step which is likely to be extended to more services.

Chief Minister Naidu was reviewed it on Wednesday during a meeting with officials in the secretariat. Officials explained to the CM during the presentation, on how people availing these services will choose their options through the messaging app.

Important services relating to the Endowments, Energy, APSRTC, Revenue, Anna Canteens, CM Relief Fund (CMRF) and Municipal Departments would be provided in the first phase. In October last year, the government of Andhra Pradesh signed an MOU with META to deliver services through messaging behemoth Whatsapp. Nara Lokesh informed that the move is aimed to help the public get access to all necessary documents just with a simple message in WhatApp.

As Chandrababu Naidu has the reputation for thinking ahead of time than other and envisions to utilize technology in a better way, WhatApp governance is going to be another great initiative which will yield good results.  The Chief Minister underscored the need for initiating steps to ensure that the information of citizens should not fall into the hands of cyber criminals. He told the officers to take necessary measures to prevent cyber crimes.
