The Telangana government on Friday issued orders providing 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections. The BC Welfare Department released Government Order (GO No. 9) implementing the decision based on the recommendations of a dedicated committee.
The state cabinet had recently decided to remove the existing 50% cap on reservations to facilitate the implementation of enhanced quotas for BCs. This comes in the wake of a High Court directive to conduct local body elections by September 30. In compliance with the court’s deadline, the government has taken a significant step by issuing the GO, clearing the way for the enforcement of 42% BC reservations in the upcoming polls.
