Monday, January 6, 2025
The Telangana government has decided to conduct a study on the potential impact of the Polavaram project, currently under construction in Andhra Pradesh, on the state. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to collaborate with a team from IIT Hyderabad for this purpose.
The Chief Minister has directed that a comprehensive report be prepared within a month. He also ordered the appointment of a special officer to coordinate with the IIT Hyderabad team on the matter.
The study will include an assessment of the risks posed to the Bhadrachalam temple due to the Polavaram project. Officials informed the Chief Minister that the temple was submerged during the 2022 floods, which reached a flow of 27 lakh cusecs.
Furthermore, the authorities raised concerns about the Godavari-Banakacherla mega project initiated by the Andhra Pradesh government. They noted that the project, planned to be built using floodwaters, has not yet received the necessary permissions. The Chief Minister has recommended that Telangana’s objections be communicated to the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh.
