Supreme Court Dismisses Defamation Case Against Revanth Reddy

Friday, December 5, 2025
In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India has dismissed a defamation case filed against Telangana Congress leader Revanth Reddy by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP had petitioned the court, claiming that Reddy’s statement during his election campaign—where he suggested that the Constitution would be amended if the Congress won—was defamatory. The petition was initially rejected by the Telangana High Court last month, and the BJP subsequently appealed to the Supreme Court.
After reviewing the arguments, a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice BR Gavai dismissed the petition, emphasizing that courts should refrain from intervening in political matters. The court further stated that political leaders should not be overly sensitive and cautioned against turning judicial forums into platforms for political battles. The decision has been seen as a reaffirmation of the judiciary’s reluctance to get involved in politically charged disputes.
