The Supreme Court has intervened with a firm order in the custodial torture case of Andhra Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker Raghu Rama Krishna Raju. The case, which originated during the previous YSRCP regime, has witnessed new turns with the court now directing Dr. Prabhavati, one of the important accused in the case, to go for interrogation. The court has instructed her that in case she fails to obey, the protection granted to her so far will be withdrawn.
The case dates back to the CID police arrest of Raghu Rama Krishna Raju, who was a YSRCP MP. He had allegedly been tortured while under arrest. Subsequent to the episode, medical examination was done in Guntur General Hospital where the superintendent, Dr. Prabhavati, submitted a report that nothing was found hurt on Raju. The report was utilized by the police for opposing Raju’s bail at the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court, nevertheless, directed that an independent examination be carried out at Secunderabad Army Hospital, which asserted the torture accusations.
In light of Raju’s complaint, the police initiated an investigation and are now preparing to arrest Dr. Prabhavati. Although she had been granted temporary protection by the Supreme Court, she has yet to appear for police questioning. As a result, the police returned to the Supreme Court, which has now set a firm deadline for Dr. Prabhavati to appear for questioning on April 7 and 8. The court has warned that any further failure to cooperate will lead to the revocation of her protection.
