The Nellore Venkatachalam court directed extension of judicial custody of former Andhra Pradesh minister and YSRCP party leader Kakani Govardhan Reddy for 14 more days. He is under investigation in a high-profile case of illegal mining Case.
Kakani, who was highly powerful under the erstwhile YSRCP government of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, has been accused of misusing his power to let illegal mining take place. When news of the impending arrest broke, he is said to have gone underground but was eventually tracked down and arrested by police in Bengaluru after a huge search operation.
Upon serving out the first 14-day remand, Kakani was produced before the Venkatachalam court, which decided to extend his custody for a further two weeks to facilitate further investigation. In the meantime, he had submitted a plea for bail; however, the court has adjourned the hearing to June 11, thereby staying any immediate decision on releasing him.
Additionally, even if Kakani is released on bail in the mining case, his freedom cannot be guaranteed as there is another pending criminal case against him. That other case is one of allegedly placing an illegal toll gate on a key road to Krishnapatnam Port in the area of Muthukur mandal. He was accused of charging container trucks passing along that route unauthorized amounts of money, which are added to the existing legal woes of the man.
