Many mega infrastructure projects are taking shape in Andhra Pradesh after the formation of a coalition government with the assistance of the central government. In the same vein, the AP government is making plans to undertake metro rail projects in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.
In this context, the AP government is planning to build the Visakhapatnam Metro in the style of a double-decker. The government thinks that the traffic congestion problem will be solved by building a double-decker metro. That is why it has been proposed to build a double-decker metro in the Visakhapatnam Metro from Madhurawada to Thatichetlapalem and from Gajuwaka to the steel plant.
A double-decker metro means there will be a road for motorists below. A flyover will also be built on it. A metro track will be laid for the metro rail above. According to the proposals, if the construction of the double-decker metro rail is completed and made available, Visakhapatnam Metro will be recognized as the longest double-decker metro in Asia.
In our country, so far, Nagpur, Bangalore and Chennai metros have been built to some extent. Due to the increase in population in cities due to urbanization and the corresponding increase in vehicle traffic, such double-decker metro constructions are being proposed to control traffic congestion.
Nagpur Metro is currently the longest double- decker metro in Asia. If Visakhapatnam Metro becomes available, this feat will be achieved. On the other hand, the Central Government has approved the proposals of the state government and experts say that if the Visakhapatnam Metro double-decker is completed, it will be a wonderful project.
On the other hand, the Visakhapatnam Metro project has been proposed to be built with a total length of 140.13 km. In the first phase, the construction of the metro project will be undertaken for 46.23 km. Of this, 20.07 km will be double-decker metro. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 11,498 crore.
