Legendary Telugu Actor Kota Srinivasa Rao Passes Away At Age 83

Kota Srinivasa Rao, an iconic Telugu actor and one of the most remarkable and endeared actors in Indian cinema, has died at the age of 83. Kota has had a legacy in Telugu cinema for several decades, with remarkable range and authority, with iconic performances watched by generations of audiences that will never be forgotten.

As reported by the family, the veteran actor had been struggling with age-related ailments for some time and died peacefully in the early morning hours.

Prior to making a foray into the world of films, Kota was employed with the State Bank of India. It was there that his passion for acting found an outlet in plays. His intrinsic talent for drama and performance found common ground with many, which eventually led to a film breakthrough. With the cult success of Aha Naa Pellanta, Kota found stardom and never looked back.

For close to three decades, he was a common sight in Telugu cinema — moving smoothly from the villain, comedy and character roles. His talent for metamorphosing into any character with conviction won him not only the support of fans but also that of filmmakers and co-stars.

Besides his successful film career, Kota Srinivasa Rao also established himself in politics. He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected as an MLA from Vijayawada. Though he came out of active politics later, he remained committed to the party and did not join any other political group.

Personal tragedy befell him when his son, who died in a road accident. Industry sources have recalled how this tragic event left a deep scar on him, emotionally.

Kota was not only an actor — he was also a vocal voice in support of the Telugu film fraternity. He often lamented the increasing presence of non-local actors within Telugu cinema and called upon the industry to promote native talent. He felt that Telugu-speaking actors were owed more recognition and steady opportunities within their own regional industry.

With more than 500 films under his belt in various languages, Kota Srinivasa Rao’s career is one of mythic proportions. His passing signals the end of an era of Indian cinema, but his work and values will inspire generations of actors and viewers yet to come.
