Suspended JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna was arrested in the early hours of Friday (May 31) at the Bengaluru Airport after he landed at the Kempegowda International Airport from Germany at around 1.15 am, officials said.
He was brought to the CID office in the city and will face a probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) over allegations of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation following a complaint by a woman who worked in his household.
The SIT formed by the Karnataka government detained him upon his arrival and will be produced in the court today in connection with the alleged obscene video case.
The two of his check-in bags were confiscated by the SIT team which took them away in a separate car. He is being interrogated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case at the CID office in Bengaluru. His voice samples and other attributes, including DNA, are likely to be collected, according to sources.
The allegations against the MP came amid the Lok Sabha elections and all eyes will be on what the Congress has to say, now that Revanna has been arrested. How the BJP handles the episode going forward and what effect the case has on BJP-JD(S) ties is also to be watched out for.
After obscene videos of Revanna sexually abusing several women came out, he reportedly left for Germany on April 27 — a day after Lok Sabha polls in the Hassan parliamentary constituency — using a diplomatic passport.
After a victim came forward to file a complaint of sexual abuse, the first FIR was registered against him on April 28. The MP, who is seeking reelection from Hassan, had said in a video message earlier this week that he would present himself before the SIT at 10 am on Friday, May 31.
