Jagan Makes Amaravati Capital Key Electoral Issue

Friday, April 18, 2025

Announcing in his Election Manifesto that soon after elections his government starts functioning from Visakhapatnam, chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy makes Amaravati capital as a key electoral issue. For the last five years practically halting Amaravati city promotion, in the name of three-capitals Jagan attempted to divide people and grab political mileage.

However, TDP and its allies Jana Sena and BJP have been categorically emphasizing that if they come to power, they will restore Amaravati and develop it as an international city. Jaganmohan Reddy, who had declared his commitment to develop Amaravati as state capital in 2019 elections and took part in passing a unanimous resolution by the state assembly, after coming to power practically shelved that move.

Though he has been giving different dates to start governance from Visakhapatnam for the last three years, his government hardly contributed anything for development of the port city. With the exposure of several land scams, it is strongly believed that YCP leaders are eying on land and mine mafia activities under the garb of administrative capital.

Moreover, from the beginning Jagan failed to get any support from people of Visakhapatnam. In the 2014 elections, when he fielded his mother YS Vijayamma from Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat, the people rejected her. In the 2019 elections, though YCP won 151 seats in the state, it was defeated in four assembly seats in Visakha city.

It may be recalled that Amaravati farmers have been agitating against conspiracy of three- capitals for the last three years and Jagan’s government also facing legal hurdles in the High Court and also Supreme Court.

Already several key YCP leaders have been facing allegations of involvement in land mafias. APTDC Haritha Resorts on Rushikonda was demolished and a 5-star hotel, convention center and CM camp office were built in the name of better accommodation for tourists at an massive investment of Rs. 450 crores. Even though cases have been filed in the court on the violation of many rules there, they said that it is a tourist accommodation.
