Intra- State Disputes A Challenge To Chandrababu And Revanth

Sunday, October 6, 2024

Though both AP Chief Minister-elect N Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy are in opposite political groups, they are having cordial relations. While congratulating Naidu over phone, Reventh expressed desire to settle intra-state issues in an amicable way.

For the last ten years, several bifurcation issues remain unresolved and disputes in many key issues kept pending. The long pendency of these issues are certain to pose a challenging task for both the Chief Ministers.

Row over Andhra Pradesh Bhavan in Delhi was resolved in March this year with the intervention of Home Minister Amit Shah the union government allocated land to the two States. However no resolution is at sight on a few more key issues besides several sittings by the central agencies.

River Krishna water sharing remained a very contentious issue between two Telugu states. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had specifically announced that irrespective of which party forms the government in Andhra Pradesh, he would press for addressing the long-pending river water sharing disputes.

Since 10 years have been completed after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh this year, the Chief Minister had recently directed the officials to take over nearly 50 buildings like Lake View Guest House in Hyderabad that were allotted to Andhra Pradesh for 10 years after June 2.

Since the majority of the elected representatives from Andhra Pradesh have permanent houses in Hyderabad,  the government has reportedly sought to take over the possession of Hermitage Building Complex, Lake View Guest House, and a building of the CB-CID until the disputes between the two States are settled.

Division and distribution of assets among the organisations and corporations under Schedule 9 and Schedule 10 have not yet been completed. This apart the issue of power dues is also pending.

More specifically, five mandals of Khammam district that were merged with Andhra Pradesh soon after the bifurcation on the initiative of the then Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu also likely to create some problems. It may be recalled that the Congress party in its election manifesto during Telangana assembly elections, had promised to get back these mandals.
