Amaravati: Heavy rainfall is affecting several districts in Andhra Pradesh due to a low-pressure system, with the India Meteorological Department issuing flash flood warnings for the next 24 hours. Alerts have been issued for East Godavari, Guntur, Krishna, West Godavari, and the Yanam region of the Union Territory, putting authorities on high alert.
Officials from the Visakhapatnam Weather Centre, including Jagannath Kumar, stated that the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify on Friday and move northwest toward northern Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Coastal Andhra is likely to receive heavy rainfall over the next week. Yellow alerts have been issued for Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri, Vizianagaram, Nandyal, and Palnadu districts. In the past 24 hours, rainfall measurements include 22 cm in Eluru, 18 cm in Mummidivaram, and 13 cm in Amalapuram, while ports in Kalingapatnam, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, and Machilipatnam have seen rising danger levels.
Prakhar Jain, MD of the State Disaster Management Authority, urged residents near the Krishna River and Lankaa villages to exercise caution. He advised against travelling on river boats, swimming in floodwaters, or fishing. At the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada, authorities are monitoring inflows exceeding four lakh cusecs, prompting a number one danger alert.
