Guntur Mirchi Yard has won another national award. This recognition was received in the One District One Product (ODOP) category. District Administrator Nagalakshmi reported to the Central Government on the chilli cultivation in the district, facilities available to farmers and government support for the year 2023-2024.
The central team visited Guntur district in January this year under the One District One Product category. To this extent, the Central Government announced that Guntur chilli has been selected for the award in the ODOP category. Collector S. Nagalakshmi will receive the award from the hands of Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal at a program to be held in Delhi on the 14th of this month.
Chilli is the main commercial crop in Guntur district. This chilli is very spicy. Due to the lands, cultivation methods and climate here, it is unique compared to chilli grown in other areas. That is why Guntur chilli is being appreciated all over the world. This chilli has special features in all stages, from seed to exports in Guntur.
Farmers from neighboring states also buy seeds here. Against this backdrop, new fertilizers and pesticides that come into the market are being introduced here. Guntur district is also a hub for new methods of cultivation. Asia’s largest chilli yard is also located here.
There are more than 80 cold storages in the vicinity of Guntur to store chilli until farmers get a remunerative price. There is a seed research station, a laboratory to test the percentage of pesticide residues in chilli. With these special features, the Guntur district administration sent a 76-page report to the central government under one district, one production department.
It mentioned that farmers have formed a group and participated in chemical-free chilli production, and the incentives provided by the central and state governments. The central government team that visited last January examined all the aspects at the field level and selected it for the award.
