US prosecutors in New York indicted Adani Group Chairman Gautam S Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani and six others on Wednesday for allegedly offering Rs 2,029 crore (US $265 million) in bribes to Indian government officials for securing “lucrative solar energy supply contracts” with state electricity distribution companies.

Dollar bond prices for Adani companies fell sharply in early Asia trade on Thursday after the Indian conglomerate’s billionaire chairman was indicted in New York over allegations of bribery and fraud. Prices for Adani Port and Special Economic Zone debt maturing in August 2027 fell more than five cents on the dollar, according to LSEG data.

Meanwhile, shares of Adani group companies plummeted by up to 20 per cent, with Adani Green Energy down by 18.76 per cent, Adani Energy Solutions by 20 per cent, Adani Enterprises by 10 per cent, Adani Power  by 13.98 per cent and Adani Ports by 10 per cent in the morning session.

Adani shares dragged the benchmark Sensex by 567 points to 77,010.85 and the NSE Nifty fell by 186 points to 23,332.20 on selling pressure at 10.13 am IST.

US prosecutors charged them of paying over USD 250 million in bribes between 2020 and 2024 to Indian government officials to win solar energy contracts on terms that could potentially bring in more than USD 2 billion in profit.

This, they alleged, was concealed from the US banks and investors from whom the Adani group raised billions of dollars for the project.

“This indictment alleges schemes to pay over $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials, to lie to investors and banks to raise billions of dollars, and to obstruct justice,” a press release issued by the US Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of New York, said quoting US Deputy Assistant Attorney General Lisa H Miller.

US law allows pursuing foreign corruption allegations if they involve certain links to American investors or markets. The Adani group did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
