BJP Retains Power In Arunachal Pradesh, SKM In Sikkim

The ruling BJP in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) have swept the assembly polls for which counting of votes took place on Sunday. Both Chief Ministers Prema Khandu (Arunachal Pradesh) and Presm Singh Tamang (Sikkim) have led their respective parties to register a grand victory.

In Arunachal Pradesh BJP had already won 10 seats out of total 60 seats, including Chief Minister Prem Kandu unanimously. In the remaining 50 seats, for which counting took place, BJP had won 34 seats and was leading in 2 more seats. Thus its total tally is likely to be 46.

The National People’s Party (NPEP) has won 5 seats, the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) won 2 seats, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 2 seats and leading in 1 more seat and Congress is leading in 1 seat, while independents have won 3 seats

In Sikkim, ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) won 31 out of the total 32 seats while Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) secured the remaining one seat. Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang won Rehan constituency on behalf of SKM. Former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling contested from two constituencies but lost both.

In the 2019 Assembly elections, the SKM won 17 seats, while the SDF secured 15 seats. 

In the 2019 Assembly polls, the BJP had won 41 assembly constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh. The JD (U) won seven assembly seats, the NPP five, Congress four and the PPA one. Two Independent candidates had also emerged victorious. 

Counting of votes for 50 assembly seats in the northeastern state began at 6 am on Sunday. In Arunachal, the counting is being held at  24 district headquarters amid heavy rain. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Pawan Kumar Sain said a three-tier security arrangement has been made in all counting centres.
