Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Cinematography and Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh has instructed the Home Department to investigate the recent decision by exhibitors to shut down theaters from June 1. The inquiry aims to identify the parties behind the move and assess its potential impact.
Jana Sena Party shared an update on X stating that there were reports of pressure from four individuals urging theater owners to close halls before the release of the film *Harihar Veeramallu*. In response, Minister Durgesh held discussions with Home Secretary Kumar Vishwajit, recommending a thorough probe into whether exhibitors and distributors have formed groups to enforce such decisions collectively.
The investigation will also focus on the number of films that could be affected and the anticipated loss in tax revenue due to potential theater closures.
Recently, exhibitors across Telugu states announced plans to close theaters from June 1, citing financial concerns. Single-screen owners argue that the current fixed-rent model is unsustainable compared to multiplexes, which operate on a revenue-sharing basis. They have demanded a shift to a percentage-based system to improve earnings.
Producers have already conducted joint meetings with exhibitors and distributors and are scheduled to meet again on Saturday. A final decision on the theater shutdown is expected following this discussion.
