Former MP of Bapatla and senior YSRCP leader Nandigam Suresh has got into legal trouble again, with a fresh police case against him in Andhra Pradesh. As per reports, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Raju has filed a complaint stating that Suresh and his brother Prabhudas physically attacked him in Uddandarayunipalem village—a sensitive Amaravati capital constituency area.
The proposed attack is said to have left TDP leader gravely hurt. He has since been admitted to AIIMS Mangalagiri for treatment and his condition closely monitored.
Nandigam Suresh, a familiar Dalit voice in the YSR Congress Party, was an MP from 2019 to 2024 and is well known as an intimate associate of former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Suresh enjoyed huge political influence under YSRCP’s rule. Nevertheless, in recent years, he has attracted controversies for his role in the anti-Amaravati movement, which has created increasing opposition from the local farming communities in the capital city.
Now that the TDP alliance is in power, officials seem to be clamping down on former ruling party supremos. Suresh was previously arrested in relation to a contentious murder plot case related to two hostile groups belonging to the same community. The case resulted in the killing of a woman called Mariyamma, and Suresh allegedly spent almost three months in jail. Suresh is also accused of being involved in an attempt on the TDP headquarters.
Even though the former MP has managed to secure bail for all the cases previously filed against him, the new charge of assault has again put him under the spotlight. Political commentators are of the view that the verdict of this case will have long-term implications, especially in the light of the state’s changing political dynamics.
While the legal fight rages on, all attention is now on the way the state government will react to this latest turn of events with a high-profile YSRCP member.
