A legal decision with great impact: the Supreme Court has rejected the petition filed by a former CID Additional SP, Vijay Paul, for the dismissal of the case pertaining to alleged torture of former MP and present Deputy Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Assembly Raghurama Krishnam Raju. Raghurama Krishnam Raju alleges he was subjected to torture while in police custody, after his arrest during the YSRCP government.
The Guntur police filed a case regarding the alleged torture, and among those named as accused was Vijay Paul. Paul attempted to get his case quashed in the High Court, but he had the whole thing escalated to the Supreme Court, which now dismissed the petition.
Besides Vijay Paul, some big names like IPS officers Seetharam Anjaneyulu and Sunil Kumar and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was named in the case. After the Supreme Court verdict, further probe will be carried out by Guntur police. The other accused might also opt for legal remedies as the case progresses further.
