Renowned playback singer P. Jayachandran, famous for his iconic song “Anaganaga Aakasham Undi,” passed away on Thursday night at the age of 80. He had been battling health issues and was receiving treatment at a hospital in Thrissur, Kerala. Jayachandran is survived by his wife and two children.
With a remarkable career spanning over several decades, Jayachandran sang more than 16,000 songs across multiple languages, including Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi. His Telugu songs, such as “Rojave Chinni Rojave” (from Surya Vamsam), “Happy Happy Birthdays” (from Suswagatham), and “Anaganaga Aakasham Undi” (from Nuvve Kavali), garnered significant admiration and continue to resonate with music enthusiasts. His final Telugu song, “Na Chelli Chandramma” from Ooru Manadhira, was released in 2002.
Jayachandran’s work earned him numerous prestigious awards, including the National Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1986 for his performance in Sri Narayana Guru. Additionally, he received five Kerala State Film Awards and two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. He also collaborated with prominent music directors, such as Ilaiyaraaja, A. R. Rahman, M. M. Keeravani, Vidyasagar, and Koti.
In addition to his music career, Jayachandran made brief appearances in Malayalam films, including Nakakshathangal and Trivandrum Lodge. His legacy in the Indian music industry will remain unforgettable.
