Two Unrelated Cases Involve Gujarati-Americans

Recent US investigations have spotlighted two serious criminal cases involving individuals of Gujarati origin. Though completely unrelated, both involve severe charges that have drawn public attention.

Arizona Motel Owner’s Sentence

Varsha Patel, a 57-year-old California resident, received a five-year suspended sentence on February 4 from a federal court in Phoenix. The judge ordered forfeiture of her Royal Inn Motel plus $744,000 in illegal profits and a $5,000 fine. Patel admitted guilt for supporting criminal enterprises using interstate commerce.

Motel Used for Illegal Activities

Federal and local authorities discovered Patel’s motel operated as a hub for prostitution and drug trafficking for years. Following neighborhood complaints about suspicious behavior near schools, investigators executed a search warrant in September 2024 that led to the motel’s closure.

New Jersey Sexual Assault Arrest

In a separate case, 46-year-old Tejas Patel from Woodbridge, New Jersey faces serious charges. Hudson County prosecutors arrested him for second-degree sexual assault and endangering a minor.

Social Media Connection Alleged

Court documents state the alleged crimes occurred multiple times in Jersey City during 2024, targeting a 15-year-old victim. Authorities claim Patel met the teenager through social media before the alleged assaults. He remains jailed awaiting court proceedings after arrest in Secaucus.

Ongoing Legal Processes

Both cases remain active in their respective jurisdictions. Arizona officials concluded their prosecution with Patel’s sentencing, while New Jersey authorities continue investigating the sexual assault allegations. Neither defendant has publicly commented on the charges.
