In a bid to propel Hyderabad into a major urban center, the state government plans to establish the Hyderabad Greater City Corporation by merging all municipal corporations and municipalities within the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) limits, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The initiative aims to enhance civic infrastructure and planning as Hyderabad expands horizontally and vertically. Presently, GHMC spans 625 square kilometers, while HMDA governs 7,300 square kilometers. If implemented, the new corporation would make Hyderabad one of India’s largest urban conglomerates.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department to prepare the proposal, drawing insights from models like the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Authorities aim to swiftly present recommendations to the government for consideration.
